Traffic Case Records in Riley County
A state-law ticket prosecuted by the county lands in Riley County District Court. It often carries a number like RL-YYYY-TR-######. Search that citation in Kansas CaseSearch. The county Court Dockets PDF lists upcoming settings too. The Riley Clerk of District Court keeps the case file.
Traffic cases in Riley County divide between state District Court and the city municipal courts. Manhattan Municipal Court handles Manhattan ordinance, parking, and routine city traffic cases. It does so through its own city-linked portal. Ogden, Riley, Leonardville, and Randolph route their tickets through municipal channels as well. Those four cities post no online municipal search. The court name and issuing agency printed on the citation are the best first clues.
County and Manhattan Traffic
Don't push a Manhattan ticket through a Riley County District Court search. The Manhattan Municipal Court hears the city's local traffic and ordinance cases at 610 Colorado Street and keeps its own records. Searches there run by Name, Citation Number, Docket Number, PD Case Number, or Vehicle Plate.
| Traffic matter | Record holder | First search |
|---|---|---|
| State or county citation filed in District Court | Riley District Court Clerk | Kansas CaseSearch |
| Manhattan city citation | Manhattan Municipal Court | City-linked municipal record search |
| Ogden, Riley, Leonardville, or Randolph ordinance ticket | Issuing municipal court | Call or visit the city office |
A municipal appeal can show up later on the district schedule labeled "Appeal - Municipal." That newer district case gets its own number and its own clerk route.
Riley County Traffic Ticket Lookups
Try every official lookup channel if the first one comes up empty. A brand-new citation may not be filed yet, and a payment page is no substitute for a case-search portal.
- Read the ticket for the issuing court, citation number, and notice-to-appear date.
- For District Court, open Kansas CaseSearch, choose District and Citation Number, and select Riley County.
- Try the full case number or party name if the citation search fails, then check the Riley Court Dockets PDF by the last digits of the case number.
- For Manhattan, use the municipal portal's Citation Number or Name mode. New city citations may take five to seven business days to appear.
- Call the Riley clerk at 785-537-6364, Manhattan Municipal Court at 785-587-2450, or the other issuing city office for routing. Staff do not conduct a general legal search by phone.
- Use the courthouse terminal or clerk counter when a public District Court traffic case is missing online.
Riley Citation Search Fields
CaseSearch currently accepts Case Number, Party Name, Business Name, Party As Business Name, and Citation Number. Pick the Court, Search Type, and Search Term first. A conditional County selector and optional filters follow. Finish the human check to run the search.
| Field | Use for Riley traffic | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Court | District | Yes |
| Search Type | Citation Number first; Case Number or Party Name as a fallback | Yes |
| Search Term | The exact citation, case number, or party term | Yes |
| County | Riley | Conditional |
| Case Type and dates | Narrow a broad result if the current form permits | No |
Treat any result as a lead only. The portal itself states that web case information is not the official court record.
Traffic Court Dates in Riley County
The date printed on the ticket comes first. For a District Court filing, cross-check it against CaseSearch and the county calendar, which updates each workday. A recent continuance may still be missing from the PDF at generation time, so a direct court notice or a later order controls.
| Citation or case number | The strongest identifier, including RL-YYYY-TR-###### when assigned. |
|---|---|
| Court | Riley County District Court or the named municipal court. |
| Date and time | The current appearance or hearing setting, subject to reset. |
| Judge and courtroom | The officer and room shown on the district report or municipal docket. |
| Setting type | First appearance, trial, status, or another event label. |
| Disposition | A later result in the case file, not merely the scheduled event. |

Payment Portal Is Not Docket
Riley's Online Payments page sends District Court and traffic payments to paykscourts.com. You need a citation or district case number plus a date of birth. Those checks match you to a payable balance. They do not reach the full event history or a certified disposition.
The county's official page ties the citation and case number straight through to checkout.
For the actual court record, rely on CaseSearch, the terminal, or the clerk instead.
Paying a Ticket vs Fighting It
Read the citation and current court instructions before picking a response. Manhattan warns that online payment carries plea and waiver consequences. If any listed violation says "Court," an appearance on the Notice to Appear is required. Riley's official FAQ lays out the District Court contest route: a not-guilty plea and a trial before a Magistrate Judge.
| Paying | Contesting |
|---|---|
| Use only when the issuing court permits payment before appearance. | Follow the ticket's appearance or plea directions by the stated date. |
| Payment may acknowledge a plea or waiver under the live terms. | The court sets a trial or hearing and the issuing officer may testify. |
| Use the official court-linked checkout and keep the receipt. | Bring the citation, relevant proof, and case number to the correct court. |
| The receipt does not replace a certified disposition. | The later court order or event records the result. |
Do not ignore the date. Riley's FAQ warns that some failures to appear may result in an arrest warrant. An unpaid infraction can also lead to a letter and license-suspension warning after 30 days. Contact the issuing court at once.
Riley Speeding Trial Route
The county FAQ sketches how to dispute a speeding citation locally. Show up on the date printed at the bottom of the ticket. Plead not guilty there. You then get a trial before a Magistrate Judge. The officer testifies there. The defendant can question the officer, be heard, and then the judge decides.
Expect the trial to run about 30 minutes, the FAQ says. The live docket sets the real clock. The FAQ also notes the County Attorney may lower a speeding charge to a nonmoving violation at his or her discretion. That is a possibility, never a promise. Bring any reinstatement or other proof the official notice requests.
Riley Traffic Diversion Application
Riley publishes a traffic and fish-and-game diversion application apart from the DUI form. It asks for contact data, driver-license number and state, citation number and date, issuing agency, prior citation and charge answers, a signature, and notary details. Attach a copy of the ticket and valid identification.
You can send it by mail, fax, email, or in person. Deliver it to the Diversion Officer at 105 Courthouse Plaza. The County Attorney lists 785-537-6390, direct line 785-565-6828, fax 785-565-6896, and attorney@rileycountyks.gov. Diversion is a privilege, not a right. The official application posts no current diversion fee.
Finish successfully and the charge is dismissed with prejudice under the published conditions. False answers can bar the program. Failure can send the case to trial on agreed facts. Court costs, fines, and diversion fees stay the defendant's responsibility.
Two Records: Court File and Driver File
A traffic court case and a Kansas driver record are two different files with different custodians. The court file is the subject here. The driver record only matters for license questions, which belong with the state office that holds it.
| Court traffic record | Driver record | |
|---|---|---|
| Custodian | Riley District Court clerk or the issuing municipal court | Kansas Division of Vehicles and Driver Control |
| Shows | Citation, settings, plea, orders, disposition, and court financial entries | State motor-vehicle record information and license status |
| Access | CaseSearch, municipal portal, terminal, or court clerk | Official Kansas revenue and Driver Control route |
A blank court web result says nothing about the state driver file. For a court disposition, ask the issuing court directly.
Riley Payment Fee Discrepancy
The checkout charges differ between two official notices. Riley County's payment page prints a 2.39 percent convenience charge. The Centralized Court Payment Center lists a 5 percent card fee, a $1 minimum, and a $1 eCheck fee. The state payment source shows its current methods and vendor-fee notice.
Open the live Riley link and check the amount on the checkout screen. Neither notice applies to every traffic case.
Traffic Record Copy Fees
Riley District Court posts no fee schedule for plain, certified, exemplified, docket, or electronic copies of traffic court records. A payment convenience charge is not a copy fee, and neither is a diversion fee. Call the clerk at 785-537-6364 for the current amount and the rules for submitting a request.
| Item | Fee | Route |
|---|---|---|
| Plain traffic case copy | Not located in official sources | Issuing court clerk |
| Certified disposition or filing | Not located in official sources | District or municipal clerk holding the case |
| District Court docket printout | Not located in official sources | Riley clerk or courthouse terminal |
| Payment vendor charge | Conflicting official notices; confirm at checkout | Active court-linked payment page |
Give the clerk the case number, the document name, and the certification you want. A narrow request moves faster than one for every record tied to a name.
