Court Dockets: What They Show

Think of a docket as the spine of a case. It ties the case number to the public case type, parties or attorneys where available, judge, scheduled events, status, and case events. Some records add a link to a filed document. The Riley County settings PDF keeps a narrower view for calendar purposes: case number, date, time, courtroom, judge, setting type, connection party, attorney, party role, and access or logistics notes.

Case numberThe county prefix, filing year, type code, and sequence for newer Riley cases.
Case informationPublic metadata such as type, parties, counsel, judge, dates, and status.
Case eventsThe chronological activity shown in the public case-information layer.
SettingA scheduled event with date, time, courtroom, judge, and hearing type.
Filed documentA petition, motion, notice, order, judgment, or other court-file item when public and available.
DispositionA result or closing action, which is different from a scheduled hearing.

Case information is never a certified copy. A public event listed does not mean its document is online. For a certified record, or for public filings beyond the web layer, the clerk's file is the source.

Riley County Docket PDF Limits

Read the local PDF as a calendar, nothing more. Riley County updates it each workday. Entries are sorted by date, time, and judge. The county's own instructions recommend Ctrl-F. Use a last name or the last two or three digits of a case number. So it answers where and when a setting is planned. It will not trace the full case-events history of a court docket. It also will not show every document behind the case.

Timing has a catch. Recent resets and continuances may not be processed yet when the report generates, so read the case number, judge, courtroom, setting type, and notes as one package. Labels like "Zoom," "In person," and "In custody" describe access or logistics only. A "Sealed" entry hides the protected facts. And a trial label marks a scheduled event, never proof that the trial actually happened.

The official Riley docket page posts both the update schedule and the Ctrl-F instructions.

Riley County Courts and Their Dockets

Riley County District Court is the state trial court of general jurisdiction here. It sits in the 21st Judicial District. Clay County sits there too. It handles criminal, civil, domestic, probate, guardianship and conservatorship, care-and-treatment, juvenile, limited-action, small-claims, and district traffic matters. Riley's bench has three district judges. Two district magistrate judges serve as well. The magistrates belong to District Court itself, not to a separate county clerk system.

A municipal conviction can reach District Court on appeal. Riley's own report carries an "Appeal - Municipal" setting label for exactly that. Federal cases live in PACER and CM/ECF, outside the Riley County court docket.

Riley County Docket District Structure

The 21st Judicial District is the structure behind Riley County's court docket. Riley County runs three district divisions plus two magistrate divisions. All of them sit inside the state district-court system. So courtroom and judge fields tell you where a setting belongs on the docket. Do not expect a separate public portal for each division. Court Services and jury coordination work out of the courthouse too. But the District Court Clerk remains the office that keeps the Riley County court docket. The official District Court landing page names Riley County's court. It also links to its 21st District resources.

Riley County court docket District Court overview

The county source confirms the local trial-court route. That comes before any search branches toward a city court, appellate court, or federal court.

Room assignments are by division. Division I sits in Room 300, Division II in Room 202, Division III in Room 303, Magistrate I in Room 206, and Magistrate II in Room 110. Assignments shift. Always confirm the room and date listed for your specific setting.

Court Dates and Settings in Riley County

A Riley County court docket row can carry many labels. You might see Arraignment, First Appearance, Preliminary Examination, Pretrial Conference, Status Conference, Motion, Final Hearing, Jury Trial, Bench Trial, Sentencing, Plea Hearing, Diversion - Status, Probation - Violation, PFA/PFS Hearing, Case Management Conference, Settlement Hearing by Zoom, or Appeal - Municipal. Each name marks a stage or a scheduled event in the case.

Never trust a last-name match by itself. Check the case number, the date, the time, the judge, the courtroom, and the setting type before you count a court date as yours. Read the note too. Riley gives remote instructions only when remote appearance has been approved. The courtroom live video page also bars recording, and a public stream does not let you join a party's remote hearing.

Some labels mislead. A reset is not a dismissal. A Final Hearing row is not the final order. A Diversion - Status entry alone is not a disposition. For the full route to confirming settings and fixing a missed date, use the Riley County Court Schedule.

Riley County Docket Number Changes

Riley case numbers follow a pattern. Newer ones start with RL. Then comes a four-digit filing year, a case-type code, and a six-digit sequence. A criminal docket example is RL-2025-CR-000123. Civil filings usually carry CV. Domestic matters carry DM, limited action LM, and district traffic TR. The code hints at the case family, though the displayed record is what controls.

One date matters for older searches. Official Riley search instructions set August 5, 2019 as the local transition date. Cases filed earlier may look like 2018-CR-000123, with no RL prefix at all. If a search fails on an older matter, try both formats. Document images from older cases may also fail to match the public web metadata one-for-one.

RL

CR
Criminal case-type code.
CV
Regular civil case-type code.
DM
Domestic or family case-type code.
LM
Limited-action case-type code.
TR
District-court traffic case-type code.

Docket Access Under Kansas Law

Kansas law splits docket access into three channels. Those channels are the internet portal, the public courthouse terminal, and nonpublic records. The split matters in Riley County. A public item can sit outside the web portal yet sit available at the courthouse terminal. A sealed or nonpublic item stays closed no matter how a requester asks, whether at the terminal or through a KORA form.

Key Kansas access rules:

Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 governs public electronic district and appellate case-record access.

Kansas Supreme Court Rule 23 addresses filing designations and the process for sealed treatment.

K.S.A. 45-218 provides the inspection, copying, request, and response framework.

K.S.A. 45-220 supplies request procedures and identifying-information rules.

K.S.A. 45-221 supplies the exemption and separation framework.

Not everything is public. Adoption files, many juvenile and CINC matters, grand-jury and search-warrant records, expunged material, investigative records, and sealed files may be excluded or restricted. Ask the clerk which channel applies. Never infer protected facts from a calendar note or a no-result docket search.

Riley County Docket Terminal Access

When CaseSearch falls short, try the public computer inside the Riley County Courthouse. It can show public case information or records the internet portal does not display. That helps with an older case. So does a missing document or a result you want confirmed in the court's own system. Bring the case number if you have it. The county FAQ says these computers search by name or case number.

The Clerk of District Court is Barbara Cragg. She is listed on the current Riley court contact page. Call 785-537-6364 or fax 785-537-6382. Public hours run 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Staff can route a call or confirm a current setting. They can explain terminal access and copy steps, and point you to the right division. They will not run a general search by phone. They cannot make a legal determination about a judgment or lien.

How the Clerk Keeps Docket Records

Riley County keeps one unified District Court clerk for state trial-court files. That office holds the criminal docket and civil docket. It also holds domestic, probate, mental-health, juvenile, limited-action, small-claims, and district traffic records. Do not confuse it with the ordinary Riley County Clerk. That is a separate county-government office. The County Attorney at 105 Courthouse Plaza runs prosecution and diversion, not certified District Court copies.

It gives the case number if known, identifies the exact docket sheet or document, notes an approximate date, and states whether you want inspection, electronic delivery, a plain copy, or certification. Ask the cost before ordering, and never substitute the Register of Deeds fee chart.

Riley County Docket Courthouse History

The courthouse is more than a place to pull a docket. County and state history place its construction and opening in the 1905 to 1907 era. The year 1906 stands as the central completion milestone. Local limestone went into the walls, official county material says. The cost ran about $50,000. A citizen even gave $1,000 toward the tower clock. That detail comes from the county timeline.

The Riley County timeline marks the courthouse and tower-clock milestones.

You can search there several ways. Try a name, citation number, docket number, police-department case number, or vehicle plate. The Manhattan Municipal Court sits at 610 Colorado Street. It handles city ordinance, parking, nuisance, animal-control, local traffic, and other listed municipal matters.

Ogden Municipal Court convenes Fridays at 9:00 a.m. at City Hall. It offers no public online case search.
